The new Opel Corsa arrives in South Africa already armed with reputation-enhancing attributes, after winning the 2020 European Best Buy Car of the Year award. This is the award for best value for money car.

What is special about the latest model, attracting awards, is the fact that the 6th generation Corsa comes standard with comprehensive assistance systems, future-forward technology and a variety of innovative specifications. All this not usually expected in its class, more so at models at the entry level.

The  Corsa 1.2N M/T (manual transmission) – the entry level model – comes with more than can be expected in terms of basic specs. From  5-inch infotainment screen and bluetooth, to automatic halogen headlamps and 15-inch steel wheel, it’s a cruise drive in this urban mover – and of course with cruise control included!

The second level model, the Corsa Edition offers a bit more comfort but it does not offer a lot more than the entry level model does.  Apart from the Smartphone Mirror Link Projection, other Elegant features are slightly bigger sizes, eg the 16-inch alloys and 7-inch infotainment screen.

More urgent info to share is that Peugeot Citroën South Africa has taken over local distribution of the Opel brand, which means the business of the new Corsa will be in the hands of Peugeot SA.

The Corsa Edition, the middle of the three derivatives, was first to arrives to these shores.

It is powered by a naturally aspirated 1,2-litre, three-cylinder petrol engine sending 55 kW (at 5 750 r/min) and 118 N.m (from 2 750 r/min) to the front wheels via a five-speed manual gearbox. Opel claims a combined fuel economy figure of 5,8 L/100 km, with CO2 emissions pegged at 130 g/km.

Measuring 4 055 mm in length with a wheelbase of 2 540 mm, the new Corsa has a claimed luggage capacity of 309 litres, expandable to 1 081 litres with the rear bench folded down.

Its safety features include ABS, electronic stability control, hill-start assist, six airbags, Isofix child-seat anchors and seatbelt reminders.

The top of the range Corsa Elegance comes with electronic climate control, leather-covered steering wheel and 6-speed automatic transmission.  For more style, the Elegance has a chrome grille and a fancy black two-tone roof.
