History makers and record breakers are set to be honoured at the 2021 Momentum gsport Awards which premieres on 31 August, bringing the curtain down on another spectacular year for women in sport.

Nominations can be made across 20 categories at gsport.co.za/nominations until 9 July, where fans can access dozens of stories written over the last year in the gsport newsroom as the initiative tracked global women’s sport excellence daily.

The easing of Covid-19 restrictions resulted in more women shattering barriers and claiming world dominance in their respective fields, setting the scene for one of the most highly contested battles for top honours at the 16th edition of Africa’s longest running women’s sport recognition platform.

This year, the awards welcome JSE-listed Imperial as partner to the African Woman in Sport award category and Market research and Insights provider, Nielsen Sports South Africa, as partner to the Sponsor of the Year category, joining leading financial services provider, Momentum, in showing increased corporate support for women’s sport.

Highly contested award categories include the prestigious Momentum Athlete of the Year, Imperial African Woman in Sport, and the Global Woman in Sport, as South Africa takes the lead in closing the gap between Africa and the rest of the world.

Founder of gsport, Kass Naidoo, says: “Through the challenges of Covid-19, women in sport found new levels of courage, to achieve some extraordinary feats, which could see us produce one of the highest quality list of finalists for this year’s awards.”

For the seventh year running, the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, will honour five Ministerial Recognition Award winners on the night, when the gsport Hall of Fame and Public Choice Award winner will also be revealed.

“Initiatives like gsport give us the amazing opportunity to challenge the current status quo of representation of women in sport and to celebrate and recognise everyone. We’re proud to partner with gsport for yet another year,” said Nontokozo Madonsela, Group Chief Marketing Officer at Momentum Metropolitan.

“I am challenging the media and other brands to take the leap to invest in and sponsor these amazing professional sportswomen,” she concluded.

The awards have come a long way since 1 August 2006 when 20 women in sport gathered in a tiny room to induct the legendary 1996 double Olympic gold medallist Penny Heyns into the gsport Hall of Fame. This kickstarted a journey of recognition that has seen over 160 individuals honoured over the past 15 years on the gsport stage.
